Sturt Plains Spelling Success

Sturt Plains cattle producers Brad Inglis and Lisa Dyer are over the moon with their ProWay Livestock Equipment designed and built spelling and dipping yards.

Diversification was always in the plans for Brad Inglis and Lisa Dyer who run the 100,000 hectare Sturt Plains cattle station, 360km south of Katherine.

Brad and Lisa unofficially subdivided a portion of land from Hayfield Station (which Lisa’s parents John and Val started in 1976) in 2013 to run their own separate business which has gone from strength to strength over the last four years.

Brad said there are 7000 head of Brahman cattle on-property, which are sent to the live export markets, sold as breeders and offered as commercial bulls.

“Our main goals are to improve our already high quality Brahman herd by focusing on enhancing their temperament and overall quality, while improving our weaning rates through innovative mustering practices and by constantly educating ourselves,” he said.

“And we’re always looking for ways to reduce the cost of production and develop the property further so it reaches its full potential without degrading the natural pastures.”

Sturt Plains Spelling Success

To help realise the potential of Sturt Plains, Brad and Lisa got in touch with ProWay Livestock Equipment to enquire about constructing a spelling and dipping yards on-property.

“Before we decided to develop this portion of land, we thought the yards would be an opportunity we could take advantage of due to our location and access to our own hay on the plains.”

“We constructed the yards through ProWay because they offer a top quality product, are easy to communicate with and build in a fast and cost efficient manner.”

“In all, the construction of cattle yards only took ProWay three weeks to complete.”

He said the ProWay design creates easy flow of cattle through the yards, and has been built with a heavy emphasis on staff safety and animal welfare.

“All this leads to reduced labour costs due to the time management gains we get even when we’re dealing with difficult cattle.”

“ProWay was very responsive with any issues or questions we had, and we really appreciated their help in designing the yards.”
